The last of the three main deck surfaces is vinyl. Vinyl decking has come a long way in recent years. With newer techniques, vinyl is stronger and better looking than in the past.
Durable Like aluminum, vinyl is highly resistant to the effects of the weather; that’s a huge advantage when you’re looking at a pier. Obviously, water isn’t an issue with vinyl. It won’t rot or corrode. It’s impervious to insects that like to burrow into natural materials. And because the color is integral–it’s the same all the way through–it’s highly resistant to fading from the sun.
Safe Vinyl decking doesn’t chip or splinter, and there are no rough edges. This especially nice if there are children using the pier. Vinyl decking also comes with a variety of surface textures that help to prevent slipping.
Green It may seem odd to describe a form of plastic as being “eco-friendly”, but it actually is. Most vinyl decking is made from recycled materials. This means that there’s no logging, mining, or drilling involved. It also means that materials that would otherwise be going into a landfill are, instead, transformed into a durable, attractive product that will see years of use. And, years down the road when your pier is ready to be replaced, it can be recyled yet again.
As with so many things in life, when choosing a decking for your pier, there isn’t a single right choice. Finding what’s right for you is what’s important. That’s part of why we’re here.
